Do your words fall flat? Do you find yourself getting caught up in jargon, repeating yourself, and letting mistakes creep in?

It can be hard to look at your work with a critical eye when you are so close to it. My expert editing services will ensure your written material is professional and polished. Whether you are writing fiction or non-fiction, a book or e-book, article, blog post or website content, I will clean up your copy so you engage readers and attract clients with your content. Please email me at laurenshay@fullstoppublishing.com.au so we can discuss your needs.

Copy-editing

More comprehensive than proofreading, my copy-editing service focuses on content, tone and sentence structure of a written piece to ensure the copy flows, is readable and consistent. As well as basic error detection, copy-editing concentrates on achieving a consistency of style.

There will be some re-writing and re-arranging of paragraphs to help with flow and clarity, but it’s not a total re-write or re-structure of what you have written. You are still the author! Copy-editing also involves checking for duplicated or repetitive text, basic error detection (eg. grammar, spelling and punctuation errors), simple formatting tasks (eg. removing double spaces, ensuring typographical consistency and looking at heading/subheading organisation), and checking facts, references and footnotes.

I copy-edit using the Track Changes function in Microsoft Word, so you can either accept or reject any changes made.

Investment: $60 per 1000 words.

Manuscript assessment

While copy-editing examines the fine detail, a manuscript evaluates the manuscript as a whole. It looks at the goal and audience of the document, and analyses whether the content “works” and flows cohesively. Ideally done before the copy-editing process, my manuscript assessment will provide you with constructive feedback on the structure, content, flow and style of your work, and suggested re-writes.

Areas addressed include:

o Content: Are all topics dealt with sufficiently? Is the content relevant, or is it bogged down by superfluous detail? Is there too much jargon? Is any major rewriting required? Is the style and tone consistent?

o Organisation: Is the content organised logically or do sections need to be rearranged for a more coherent read? Are tables, images or graphics used appropriately, or is there a need for extra visual information? Is appropriate referencing included? Are the chapter headings and subheadings reflective of the content?

o Exposition: Are your arguments clear and intelligible? Are they supported by research?

Please note that structural editing does not include copy editing or proofreading, as these are best conducted after a structural edit. Structural edits are suggestions and recommendations only – as the writer, you retain control your work and can choose which structural changes to implement.

Investment: $55 per 1000 words.
